All of us in here at ZTL have been traveling after the holidays. Pumpkin just returned from a Caribbean cruise and wanted another Dirty Shirley. Normally we wouldn't be sipping such a drink in our tiki bar, but we let her have what she wants just this one time. 1.5 oz Vodka, .75 oz grenadine (we used real homemade pomegranate syrup) and 4-5 oz lemon lime soda are a nice combination when and only when combined correctly in the right amounts. Sunshine kept to his palate and enjoyed a Hemingway Daiquiri. You can click for the recipe and the story behind the classic cocktail.
Pupu platters and tiki drinks were made for each other. Kalani and Sunshine sample singed meats, spicy dipping sauces and a new cocktail called Cherry Bonzai. We also review two new rums on the market. Sun Rum and Bacoo Rum have popped up on a few shelves in our local liquor barns and we enjoyed both, sharing our tasting with you. Its a tough job.
Aloha and Cheers! This is our annual Holiday Spectacular. Its best to just mix yourself a drink and listen to this episode. All four hosts are here in the lounge to exchange tacky gifts, enjoy some of our favorite holiday exotica and let the year go by. Be sure to visit our cocktails page for a half dozen recipes that will tickle your taste buds with winter cheer.
Music Show! Sunshine is in the lounge solo on this episode. When the ladies of the lounge are away Sunshine gets to fill the void with more exotica of his choosing. This time we have some Lex Baxter, The Crazed Mugs, The Mallet Men, Robert Drasnin, Bas Sheva and more. Pour yourself a nice drink and relax while Sunshine does the talking, plays the tunes and fills 60 minutes of your life with tiki bar inspiration.
Sweet dark cherries with pineapple infused rum and homemade falernum are the highlights of the Cherry Bonzai. A potent cocktail that is uncomplicated with ingredients that should be fairly easy to come by. We believe that every home tiki bar should try infusing a small batch of falernum just once so that you can see and taste the amazing difference that nothing on the market can offer.
What is a fruitcake? That question is harder and harder to answer as each generation comes into adulthood. Those of us in our 40's, 50's 60's and even more silver of generations know that it is a baked good of sometimes evil and sometimes joy. Dense. Heavy. Spiced. Fruity. What if a cocktail imparted only the better notions of said baked good? That is what My Tropical Fruitcake tries to be. Two parts spice and three part fruit is what makes My Tropical Fruitcake a miracle in mixology. Stirred together these liquors and spiced rum become something reminiscent of the forbidden cake of your darkest holiday dreams.
